Broken-in hiking boots
Never travel in boots you haven't worn for 30+ miles. New boots + 14-day trek = guaranteed blisters.
Merino wool base layers (2 sets)
Warm wet, doesn't smell after 4 days. Worth every dollar over synthetic for multi-day trips.
Rain shell (3-layer, taped seams)
Mountain weather has zero patience for ponchos. A real Gore-Tex shell is the difference between miserable and fine.
Headlamp + spare batteries
Hands-free is non-negotiable on dawn starts. 200+ lumens with a red night mode is standard.
First-aid kit with blister care
Blisters end more hikes than weather. Leukotape, ibuprofen, antihistamines, and personal meds at minimum.
Water filter or purification tabs
Backup when refill stations run dry. Sawyer Squeeze or Aquatabs both weigh under 100g.
Trekking poles
Reduce knee load by ~25% on descents. Foldable carbon poles fit in a carry-on.
Insulated puffy jacket
Synthetic insulation (Primaloft) for wet climates, down for dry. Packs to the size of a Nalgene.
Sun hoodie or UPF long-sleeve
At altitude, UV is 50% stronger. A hoodie protects neck and ears better than sunscreen alone.
Snacks with 100+ cal/oz
Nuts, jerky, dense bars. You can't out-eat caloric loss on a hard hiking day, but you can come close.
Power bank + cable
Cold drains phone batteries fast. A 10,000mAh bank charges a phone 2–3 times.
Buff / neck gaiter
Dust mask, neck warmer, hair tie, sweatband. The most versatile 30g you'll pack.

A new backpack on day 1 of a trek is a 14-day mistake. Wear your full kit on a 10-mile day hike before you fly.
Wet socks = blisters. Always have a dry pair. Merino socks dry overnight clipped to your pack.
Pack covers blow off and leak at seams. Line your backpack with a heavy-duty trash bag or dry sack — guaranteed dry contents.
Water is 1kg per liter. In areas with frequent streams, carry 1L and a filter, not 3L. In dry climates, reverse.
Adventure travelers under-eat by 30% on average. You'll wear the same shirt 4 days; you won't regret extra calories.
Mountain weather changes hour by hour, and the layering system is what keeps you alive and comfortable. The base layer (merino or synthetic, never cotton) wicks sweat away from skin. The mid layer (grid fleece or light down) traps body heat. The shell layer (Gore-Tex or equivalent) blocks wind and rain. For very cold conditions, add an insulated puffy jacket that goes on the moment you stop moving — your body cools fast when you're not generating heat. Each layer should be removable independently; you'll add and shed them five times a day.
Boots vs trail runners is the defining adventure-pack debate. For pack weights under 25 lbs and well-maintained trails, trail runners (Altra Lone Peak, Hoka Speedgoat) are lighter, faster-drying, and prevent the worst blisters. For technical terrain, scree, talus, or pack weights over 30 lbs, mid- or high-cut boots (Salomon Quest, Lowa Renegade) protect ankles. Whatever you choose: wear them on three full-day hikes at home before any real trip. New footwear + multi-day hike is the single most common cause of trip-ending blisters.
The classic 'ten essentials' apply to every adventure trip, day hike or expedition: navigation (map + compass + downloaded GPX), sun protection (sunscreen + sunglasses + hat), insulation (extra warm layer), illumination (headlamp + spare batteries), first-aid supplies, fire (lighter + tinder), repair kit & tools (knife, duct tape), nutrition (extra day of food), hydration (extra water + filter), and emergency shelter (bivy or space blanket). For remote trips, add a satellite communicator (Garmin inReach Mini) — at $400 it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

Avoid cotton — it stays wet and chills you. Merino is best for warmth and odor; synthetic dries fastest and costs less. Most hikers run merino base + synthetic mid.
For downhill on long hikes, yes — they reduce knee load by ~25%. For flat trails or scrambling, they're optional and sometimes get in the way.
